Today's DBMSs: How autonomic are they?

چکیده
The increasing complexity of Database Management Systems (DBMSs) and the dearth of their experienced administrators make an urgent call for an Autonomic DBMS that is capable of managing and maintaining itself. In this paper, we examine the characteristics that a DBMS should have in order to be considered autonomic and assess the position of today’s commercial DBMSs such as DB2, SQL Server, and Oracle.

Towards Autonomic Workload Management in DBMSs
Workload management is the discipline of effectively managing, controlling, and monitoring work flow across computing systems. It is an increasingly important requirement of database management systems (DBMSs) in view of the trends towards server consolidation and more diverse workloads. Workload management is necessary so the DBMS can be business-objective oriented, can provide efficient diffe...
متن کاملAdapting Mixed Workloads to Meet SLOs in Autonomic DBMSs
Workload adaptation allows an autonomic database management system (DBMS) to efficiently make use of its resources and meet its Service Level Objectives (SLOs) by filtering or controlling the workload presented to it. Workload adaptation has been shown to be effective for OLAP and OLTP workloads. We outline a framework of workload adaptation and explain how it can be extended to manage mixed wo...
متن کاملUser-Defined Aggregates for Advanced Database Applications
An explosive growth in the scale and complexity of information services is stretching database technology beyond its limits. The state-of-the-art data base management systems (DBMSs) provide extensibility through user-defined functions and data types, but they are still ineffective in many critical applications areas, such as data mining [5]. Therefore, the project's goal is to develop a new ex...
متن کاملUtility Function-based Workload Management for DBMSs
In the practice of autonomic computing, utility functions have been applied for achieving self-optimization in autonomic computing systems. Utility functions are suggested to guide an autonomic computing system to optimize its own behavior in accordance with high-level objectives specified by the system administrators. In this paper, we present two concrete examples to illustrate how utility fu...
متن کاملDeclarative Languages as the Cornerstone of Analytics and Visualizations
Supporting the data analytics and visualization requirements of data science and life sciences is no easy feat. Traditional database management systems (DBMSs), although extremely successful in enterprise settings, are not directly applicable in these new scenarios, as they were designed with business intelligence scenarios in mind and are thus not suitable for the (a) new types of data (such a...
